My work is a comment to the notion that printmaking essentially is a craft and a technique, and therefore can’t be placed within the category of fine art.

Even though there are many examples of weaving in the national and international art world, this art-form has likewise been described as an example of an elaborate and skilled craft, practised by craft artisans and not artists.

In this work, I am using my skill as a printmaker, my imagination and experience as an artist to create a work which resembles a weaving, and so referencing this other art form in a screen printed format.

I would like to think that this work finds itself somewhere within the blurred boundaries between art, craft and design. That in designing and making it like a weaving, the works have something to do with it being a cultural signifier of history and of identity. Like a fragile map between two points; Sweden, my birth place, and New Zealand, where I live now.

The silk organza is one of my favourite substrates and particularly suited to screen printing, because it is a fine textured textile, easy to work with. It has a quality of transparency and fragility but also one of strength.
